フランク・ブラングィンは、世紀末の装飾芸術運動を背景に、タブローや壁画、版画から、室内装飾、家具デザインまで幅広く手がけ、国際的に活躍した芸術家である。海や船、そして造船所や港湾労働者を題材とする絵画を多数残しており、松方がこの画家に魅せられた理由もおそらくそこに見ることができる。松方コレクションには、大型装飾パネルを含む油彩画約80点、素描100点強、版画約400点にのぼるブラングィン作品があったことがわかっている。だが、主要作品を含むその多数の作品が1939年の倉庫火災で焼失した。《松方幸次郎の肖像》は、松方とブラングィンがロンドンで出会った頃、そして美術品収集を始める1916年に制作された。多数の作品を残したブラングィンだが、肖像画の作例は少ない。松方にこの画家を紹介したのは、ロンドンに外交官として駐在していた芸術通の幸次郎の兄正作や、在英日本人画家の石橋和訓、あるいは山中商会の岡田友次を通じて知り合ったとも言われる。ふたりは親しい関係を築き、松方はブラングィンに、彼の作品の売却、東京に建設予定の美術館のデザイン、そして他の画家の作品の購入の代理を依頼することになる。本作品では、カンヴァスの裏面に「1時間で描く」とあるように、素早い筆さばきで生き生きとモデルの姿が捉えられている。磊落な様子で肘掛椅子に腰かける松方は当時50代初めである。パイプをくわえ、寛いだ表情からは、画家との親密さが窺える。画面の色調は茶色を基調としているが、背景を飾るチューリップの花と葉の装飾性が画面に華やかさを加えている。（出典: 国立西洋美術館開館60周年記念　松方コレクション展. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 2019. cat. no. 2, 一部文言修正）

Acquired from artist by Kojiro Matsukata, Kobe, ca. 1916; inherited by his family; deposited in the Bridgestone Museum of Art, Tokyo, 1953–6 April 1984; deposited in NMWA, 19 September 1959–27 September 1961, Dep. 59-2 (D-31); donated by the heirs of Kojiro Matsukata to NMWA, 17 October 2017.
