パリから約28km離れ、近代化された町並と田園の風景が融合した町ポントワーズで、セザンヌは1872年から1881年まで、印象派の画家ピサロと多くの時間を共有し、ときにイーゼルを並べ同じ風景を描きました。この経験は、それまで陰鬱な主題を暗い色調と重い筆触で描いていたこの画家を、明るく軽快な作風へと導きます。さらにセザンヌは、ここから単なる自然の再現ではない、創作物として自立した構築的な画面を作り出す道を辿ります。その際、全体の構図や色彩だけではなく、筆触のあり方もまた構成上の重要な要素となりました。本作の水面から橋、丘、空に向かって積み上げられた構図、様々な方向を向く多様な筆触は、この後晩年に向かうに従い、いっそう意図的に用いられるようになり、セザンヌ独自の様式を顕著に示すものとなりました。（出典: 常設展解説パネル)
