ウィリアム=アドルフ・ブーグロー（1825－1905）は美術アカデミーの重鎮として19世紀後半のフランスの美術界に君臨した画家です。古典の伝統と高度な技術に支えられた神話画や宗教画の大作によってサロンで成功を収めました。念入りに仕上げられた滑らかな肌を持つ甘美で官能的な女性像はとくに知られています。 一方、画廊と契約を結び、絵画市場向けの小品も制作しています。小さな手を胸もとであわせて祈りのポーズをとる幼い少女の半身像を描いた本作品は、こうした商業的な人物画のひとつと考えられます。母子の情愛や愛らしい少女などを描いたブーグローの人物画や風俗画は、当時、英米のコレクターのあいだで広い人気を博しました。この絵が描かれた年、ブーグローは、サロンやパリ万国博などに出品するための大作のほか、グーピル画廊のために《春の花々》を制作、好評を得たことから、そのヴァリアント《花を抱える子供》を弟子と共同制作しています。本作品の少女はこれらの作品に描かれた少女に酷似しています。もちろん必ずしもモデルの現実的な姿が描かれるわけではありませんが、ブーグローはしばしば家族や近所の少女たちをモデルとして使いました。また1865年に描かれた同主題の作品（《祈り》）に見られる類型的で演出された少女像と比べると、本作品にはより抑制的で自然な表現が見られ、現実のモデルの存在を感じることができそうです。 （出典: ゼフュロス: 国立西洋美術館ニュース, 第41号, 2009年. p.4）
