Harvest Threshing (Le Dépiquage des moissons)

Harvest Threshing (Le Dépiquage des moissons)

Cubism, as established by Picasso and Braque, was the most revolutionary art form of the beginning of the 20th century. Cubism is characterized by the geometric division of the composition, as if viewed simultaneously from numerous viewpoints. The Cubist movement peaked around the year 1912, and that year marked the year of the Section d'Or exhibition in Paris which could be considered a comprehensive survey of the Cubist achievement. This painting by Gleizes, Harvest Threshing, was one of the most important works displayed in that 1912 exhibition. This typical Cubist work, with its complex composition created from geometric forms, may at first seem hard to decipher. Close examination reveals that farmers are shown in the middle of the composition, harvesting grain, while the farmwives are seen on the left, probably after having finished their lunch break and returning to work. A church steeple can be seen in the background, along with a row of houses. A dog sits in the foreground, along with other animals, and birds flying in the sky. Here the Cubist visual vocabulary was used to fuse the workers and their surrounding scene into a unified whole, thus emphasizing the unity of land and those who work the land. While harvest scenes are a traditional painting subject, here Gleizes has given new form to a traditional subject, a pursuit that had become extremely important to Gleizes.
