20世紀の初頭の最も革新的な芸術運動はキュビスム（立体派）です。これはピカソとブラックによって創始されました。様式的には、画面が幾何学的に分割され、複数の視点からの眺めを一つにまとめあげていることが特徴です。1912年、パリでは「セクション・ドール（黄金分割）」展が開催され、本作は最重要作品として出品されました。ここで、収穫の場面という伝統的な主題が、キュビスムの新しい造形でやり直されています。（出典: 展示室作品解説パネル）

Pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, Cubism was the most innovative art movement of the early twentieth century. The Cubist method is to integrate multiple viewpoints of a subject within a geometrically divided picture plane. This painting was one of the highlights of a comprehensive Cubist exhibition, “Section d’Or” (“Golden Section”), held in Paris in 1912. The traditional harvest scene is transformed by the new Cubist approach. (Source: Gallery label, October 2016)
