ヤン・ブリューゲルはピーテル・ブリューゲル（父）の次男で、板や銅板に細密に描かれた風景と花の静物画に独自の世界を築きました。1599年の年記を持つ本作は、長いイタリア滞在から帰国しアントウェルペン（現ベルギー）を活動の拠点に据えて間もない頃の作です。　前景には、うっそうとした森の中を歩む人物が描かれていますが、ロバに乗った老人はアブラハムで、その手前で薪を抱えて歩く若者が息子のイサクです。これは、神に息子を犠牲に捧げるよう命じられたアブラハムが、イサクと共にモリアの地へと旅をする場面になっています。ヤンはこうした宗教主題を表す人物を点景として添えた森林風景を数多く描きました。（出典: 展示室作品解説パネル）

The second son of Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Jan Brueghel the Elder painted landscapes and finely detailed floral still lifes on panel and copperplate. This work depicts the scene from the Bible when Abraham, commanded by God to sacrifice his own son, is travelling to the land of Moriah. In the foreground, the elderly Abraham is riding a donkey, while the young Isaac, his son, accompanies him carrying a bundle of firewood. The painting is one of many examples of the artist incorporating religious figures as staffage into forest landscapes. (Source: Gallery label, July 2016)
