ルクレティアは、ローマ史に登場する女性で、タルクィニウス・コッラーティヌスの妻。ローマ王の息子セクトゥス・タルクィニウスによる陵辱を恥じとして、短剣で胸を突いて自殺した。この事件は王政に対する反感を盛りあげ、ローマが共和制に移行するきっかけとなった。美術の主題としての彼女は、貞節に殉じた女性、悪徳に対する報いの象徴と解釈される一方で、キリスト教倫理に反して自殺した女性として、両義的な意味をもって描かれている。 本作を描いたグイド・レーニは、グエルチーノと並んで、17世紀のボローニャ派を代表する画家。ラファエッロや古代の画家を深く研究し、古典主義的な様式を示しているが、本作ではさらに、後期の特徴となる洗練された、色調の抑制された描法を見せている。（出典: 展示室作品解説パネル）
