ウァルスは、ドイツの画家アダム・エルスハイマーの最も優れた後継者の一人である。イタリア各地を転々としていたウァルスがナポリに滞在していた折、若きクロード・ロランはこの画家に学び、少なからぬ影響を受けたものと推測されている。本作品は「聖家族のエジプト逃避」が主題になってはいるものの、詩情あふれる風景描写がこの絵の目的である。（出典: デジタルギャラリー. 1999-2006）

Wals was one of the most gifted successors to Adam Elsheimer, the German painter. The young Claude Lorrain studied with Wals in Naples, where Wals stayed for a while during the course of his widespread sojourns in Italy, and it is thought that Lorrain was greatly influenced by him. The subject of this painting is "Flight of the Holy Family into Egypt", but its purpose is to depict a landscape filled with poetic emotion. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
