この絵の制作された1890年は、ドニが初めてサロンに入選し、続いて「絵画とは、一定の秩序のもとに配された色彩によって覆われた、平らな面であることを忘れまい」という、有名な絵画の定義を含む論文を発表した年として重要である。事実この作品には、縦長の画面や署名などにみられる日本美術の影響、モザイクのような装飾的効果を発揮する点描技法の使用、宗教的礼拝像にも似た人物の取り扱いなど、この時期のドニの作品に特徴的なさまざまな要素が指摘されよう。そして、画面全体には、見慣れた身辺の事物の中にほのかな神秘感を漂わせるという、象徴主義時代のドニ芸術の手法が見事に発揮されている。（典拠: 国立西洋美術館名作選. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 2006. cat. no. 107）

In the year that this work was created, 1890, Denis was accepted for the Salon for the first time and published the essay that includes his famous definition of painting. "It is well to remember that a painting … is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order." We can clearly see the influence of Japanese art in this work with its vertically arranged composition and signature form. This influence, his use of a mosaic-like decorative effect realized through pointillist techniques, and the religious icon-like representation of the figure all represent characteristic elements of Denis' work during this period. The mystical air given to familiar everyday things which suffuses the entire image ably represents the artistic techniques of Denis' symbolist period.
