マグダラのマリアは、娼婦であったがイエスに会って悔い改めたとされる、新約聖書に登場する女性である。絵画の中ではしばしばこのように悔悛の場面が描かれる。この作品はドーミエがある聖堂のために描く予定だった大作（結局描かれなかった）の習作で、そのためにかえってこの画家らしい明暗の対比や、筆遣いが明瞭に認められる。（出典: デジタルギャラリー. 1999-2006）

Mary Magdalene, a female figure in the New Testament, was a prostitute who repented after meeting Jesus — a theme popularly depicted in paintings. This work was a study for a large painting that Daumier had been scheduled to do, but never actually did, for a church. The contrast between light and dark and the brushwork that characterize Daumier's work are clearly recongnizable in this study piece. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
