「廃墟のロベール」と呼ばれたこのフランス人画家は、イタリアの古代遺跡や名勝をモチーフとした数々の奇想の風景によって歴史に名を残しています。ここに見る二点の作品[もう1点は《モンテ・カヴァッロの巨像と聖堂の見える空想のローマ景観》(P.1977-0002)を指す]は、イタリアから帰国後、ロベールの活動が最も充実した時期に制作された対作で、右の作品[本作品]の水盤の縁に署名と1786年の年記が認められます。彼の数多くの風景画と同様、ローマ市内に実在するモニュメントを自由に選択して複合構成した、空想の眺めとなっています。例えば、右の作品[本作品]にはマルクス・アウレリウス帝騎馬像やトラヤヌス帝記念柱が、左の作品[《モンテ・カヴァッロの巨像と聖堂の見える空想のローマ景観》]にはカンピドリオ広場とコンセルヴァトーリ宮が描かれています。（出典: 展示室作品解説パネル）

The French artist Hubert Robert, dubbed "Robert of the Ruins" by his contemporaries, excelled at creating fantastical landscapes incorporating motifs of ancient ruins and popular sites in Italy. This pair of paintings was executed at the height of his success following his return to France. Robert has created the imaginary scenes by freely selecting well-known Roman monuments and buildings. The image on the right includes the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius and the Column of Trajan; its companion piece on the left features the shaded façade of the Palazzo dei Conservatori.
