クロード・ロランは、プッサンと並ぶ17世紀フランス古典主義絵画の巨匠です。彼はローマで活躍し、風景描写において高い名声を得ましたが、本作品でも、クロード特有の牧歌的情緒の漂う自然が舞台となっています。画面右を占める木立は湿潤な空気と穏やかな光に満たされ、一方左奥には川が蛇行していく先にパノラマが開けています。遠景の山並みには雨雲がかかっていますが、その合間からはからりとした空が覗き、様々な光や空気のニュアンスを巧みに描き分けるクロードの妙技が存分に発揮されています。 本作の場面は、木陰に花環をつけた牧羊神パンが座り、彼の前で半人半獣のサテュロスやニンフたちが音楽に合わせて踊る、祝祭的な光景です。これはリヨンの商人のために描かれたもので、恐らく結婚を記念しての注文であったと考えられます。（出典: 展示室作品解説パネル）

Claude Lorrain was one of the seventeenth century's greatest exponents of French Classical painting. Working in Rome, he gained a high reputation particularly for his landscapes. The pastoral scene presented here fully shows off the artist's exquisite skill at depicting nuances of light and atmosphere. It is a festive scene in which Pan, god of shepherds and flocks, and a nymph, both crowned with a wreath, sit in the shade of some trees as satyrs and other nymphs dance to music.
