この祭壇画は、妻と娘の冥福を祈るために、その夫が教会に奉納したものです。アルノ川を挟むフィレンツェの街を背景に、画面上部に神、精霊、キリストの「三位一体」が配され、十字架の足元には母と娘と思われる二人の遺体、その両側に、この絵の奉納者とその息子が、聖母および聖ヨハネと共に描かれています。背景左右の山の斜面には、聖書に基づく八つの物語場面が描き込まれています。作者セッライオはフィリッポ・リッピの弟子と伝えられ、同時代のギルランダイオやボッティチェリの影響を受けた折衷的な様式を特徴とし、本作品は15世紀後半のフィレンツェ派の様式を端的に示す作例と言えます。（出典: 展示室作品解説パネル）

This altarpiece was originally dedicated to a church by a widower for the repose of the souls of his deseased wife and daughter. Their dead bodies are shown laid out at the foot of the cross. To the left, we can see the grieving widower with the Virgin Mary, and to the right is his weeping son comforted by St. John. The city of Florence appears in the background, and various scenes from the Bible are being played out in the middle ground. This work boldly displays the style of the Florentine School in the latter half of the fifteenth century. (Source: Gallery label, July 2016)
