19世紀の画家たちにとって、イタリアは憧れの土地でした。コローもイタリアを3度訪れ、戸外スケッチを手がけています。ナポリ滞在は短いものでしたが、画家に強い印象を残したようで、後年も、この地を追想した風景画をいく度か描きました。なかでも銀灰色のニュアンスが散らされた本作品は、コロー晩年の画風をよくあらわしています。この特徴的な縦長の大画面の前に立つと、木立の奥から海風が吹き寄せてくるようです。（出典: 展示室作品解説パネル）

For painters of the nineteenth century, Italy was a place of inspiration. Camille Corot visited there three times to sketch en plein air. Although in Naples only briefly, it seems he was greatly impressed since, in later years, he produced several landscapes conjuring up the southern city. This one shows off Corot’s late style in the subtle, silver-gray touches sprinkled over the picture. Standing before this large-scale, characteristically tall canvas, we can almost feel the sea breeze blowing up through the trees. (Source: Gallery label, October 2016)
