メナールは、森林や水辺に古代風の人物のたたずむ、いわゆる歴史的風景画に属する作品を得意としたが、その多くに共通する特色として、薄明の光がある。《黄昏》《夕べの調和》《秋》などと題されたそれらの作品は、いずれも特定の物語を描いたものではなく、神秘的な、自然と人間との調和を、瞑想的に暗示するものであった。《秋の森》と呼ばれるこの作品は、鹿のいる田園風景を描いたものだが、明らかに黄昏時の背景の空や、秋という設定そのものに、象徴的な作品との共通性を見出すことができる。（出典: 国立西洋美術館名作選. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 2006. cat. no. 104）

Raised in the intellectual family of an art historian, Ménard was influenced by the Barbizon painters who visited his father. His works began to show a strong symbolist tendency after his studies at the Academy. He painted a great number of pictures of people in antique costumes standing by lakes and trees, so-called historical landscapes, in which a mysterious harmony between man and nature was suggestively rendered. The symbolic elements in this work depicting deer in the countryside can be found in the twilight sky and autumnal season. Purchased by Kojiro Matsukata, Kobe through Léonce Bénédite, ca. January 1919 (Fr. 8,000) [see letter from Léonce Bénédite to Suzuki & Co., dated 19 January 1919, in the Bibliothèque centrale des musées nationaux, Paris (copy in NMWA curatorial file)]; sequestered by French government, 1944; vested in French government under San Francisco Peace Treaty, 1952; transferred from French to Japanese government, 23 January 1959; entered into NMWA, April 1959.
