暗く沈んだ色調で描かれる肖像画の系列とは異なり、ファンタン＝ラトゥールの構想画は、豊饒な色彩と動勢に満ちた筆致で制作されている。本作品は、画家自身より「想像力のもくろみ」と呼ばれたそのような傾向の作品の中では比較的初期のものと推定され、彼がルーヴル美術館で研究した、ティツィアーノやヴェロネーゼ、ルーベンス、ワトーなどの影響を窺うことができよう。 聖アント二ウスは、エジブトの小村コマに修道院を創始した修道僧である。251年に生まれ、356年に105歳で死んだといわれる。テーベの砂漠での修業時代に、悪魔から誘惑され、それに耐えたと伝えられる。この作品では悪魔たちは舞い踊る美女の群れに姿をかえて聖者を取り巻き、あるものは官能の美酒を唇におしつけ、あるものは全裸の姿態をくねらせる。それに対して聖者は天の方に眸をあげ、神に救いを求めている。（出典: 国立西洋美術館名作選. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 1989. cat. no. 84）

As opposed to his somber hued portraits, Fantin-Latour's conceptual works are filled with rich colors and movement-filled brush work. St. Anthony was an Egyptian monk. During his period of ascetic practice in the Theban desert, the saint was tormented by seductive witches and his endurance through these trials is legendary. Here these evil spirits appear as dancing beautiful women that entwine themselves around the saint. The saint turns his eyes towards heaven and appeals to God for salvation.
