道化は愚かさや好色の象徴として描かれた存在。《男女の道化》（G.2003-0100）では、ふたりが足を絡ませているが、男は男性器の形をした小道具を右手に持ち、女は女性器を暗示する壺に手をかけている。一方、《小さな道化》（G.2003-0102）では、道化が画面中をうねるリボンに手足を絡めとられている。リボンの銘文は、「私はお前を引き裂いて糞をひってやった」と読める。(出典: クラインマイスター：16世紀前半ドイツにおける小画面の版画家たち, 2012. [展覧会作品解説パネル])
