『中国を旅すれば』：（3） 税関 税関に着くと、旅行者はつつき回され、あちこち探られて、裸にむかれ、身ぐるみはがれる―服は入国できない、そんなものは中国で作られているから。―かつらもだめ、そんなものは作られてないから。―長靴もだめ、皮はご法度だから。―浣腸ポンプもだめ、なんか変な器具だから・・・。―なんでもかんでも没収して、残りのものには関税を支払わせる、で、それがすんだら、空気みたいに身軽になってるってわけ・・・ <JOURNEY TO CHINA>: (3) THE CUSTOMS: Having arrived at customs, the traveller is examined, ransacked, undressed and rifled — His clothes are not admitted to [this country], since they make them in China; — His wig [is], because they do not make them; — His boots, because leather is prohibited; — His clyster-pump, because it is a mechanical object with a suspect use... they seize everything and make him pay duty for the rest, after which, he is as free as the air...
