ホガースは近代英国絵画の創始者。主に版画で活躍。17世紀オランダ風俗画の伝統を継承しつつも、登場人物の視線を交錯させたり、顔の表情に劇的効果を与えることによって画面に生気をもたらし、勤勉を尊ぶ資本主義勃興期の市民階級の倫理観に根ざした、新しい風俗画を確立した。 「放蕩一代」は、主人公トム・レイクウェル(レイクとは放蕩者の意味)が、父の遺産を相続してから放蕩の末に狂人として精神病院に収容されるまでを綴った年代記である。 第7図。再度破産して監獄に入れられたトムは、戯曲を書いてコヴェント・ガーデン劇場の支配人に送るが、採用されず、老妻に罵られる。娘を連れて慰問に来たサラは絶望のあまり気絶する。(出典: 平成6年度新収作品 [配布資料]. 国立西洋美術館, 1995. より一部引用)
