ドイツのフランケン地方に生まれたルカス・クラーナハ（父）は、1505年からザクセン選帝候フリードリヒ賢公に仕えた、ドイツ・ルネサンスを代表する芸術家の一人である。この2点＊とも、おそらくザクセン家の人物を写した肖像版画と思われる。≪馬上の聖ゲオルギウス≫は龍を退治した伝説的聖人に見立てて王家の人物を表したもの、一方≪鎧を着た馬上の騎士≫は、豪華な衣装で馬上試合に臨む指揮官といった風情で表されている。後者は、3点しか確認されていない貴重な版画である。（出典: 平成6年度新収作品 [配布資料]. 国立西洋美術館, 1995. より一部引用。＊≪馬上の聖ゲオルギウス≫、≪鎧を着た馬上の騎士≫）
