ショーンガウアーは15世紀ドイツの著名な画家・版画家で､彼の銅版画は現在115点を数える。この作品では､キリストとマリアは天上界の玉座に二人並んで腰をかけている。向かって右側の救世主キリストは､膝上にのせた世界球に左手を添え､右手をあげて聖母マリアに祝福を与え､それを受けるマリアは軽く目を伏せて両手をあわせている。その情景を玉座の向こうで三人の天使が見守っている。ほぼ方形の版型をもつ本作品は､玉座の左右に二人の人物を配した極めて明快な対称構図が特徴的であるが､このような図像の源として､ゴシック盛期の聖堂入口上部の半円形部分に表現された浮彫り彫刻などが考えられる。（出典: デジタルギャラリー. 1999-2006）

Christ and the Virgin are seated next to each other on a celestial throne. Three angels are watching over from behind the throne. This engraving is done on a more or less square plate and is characterized by the way the two figures are positioned on both sides of the throne to form an extremely explicit symmetry. The iconography could have been inspired by a relief sculpted on the tympanum above the southern entrance to a church at the height of the Gothic period. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
