ピラネージは崩壊してゆくバロック的世界観と、古代遺跡の発掘などに触発されて抬頭しつつあった新古典主義との結節点をなす版画家である。建築家になる夢を捨て切れなかった彼は、さまざまな遺跡、廃墟、建築を独特の遠近法で捉え、エッチングで刻んだ。その膨大な数のヴェドゥータ（都市景観図）版画は、ヨーロッパ中に波及していた古代への関心およびイタリア旅行ブームとあいまって大いに好評を博し、ロマン主義の展開にも重要な役割を果たした。その中でも特に傑出しているのが初期の連作「牢獄」であり、作者の鬱積した精神と稀有な想像力がいかんなく発揮されている。ローマ在住のフランス人ジャン・ブシャールによって出版されたことから一般に「ブシャール版」と呼ばれる初版は1749/50年の発行。14枚からなるこの初版は、数少ない描線と画面中央の大きな余白によって鑑賞者の想像力を喚起することを意図していたが、その反面で未完成という印象を免れず、好評を博すことはできなかったようである。そのためピラネージは、1760-61年頃、初版にエッチングで大胆に加筆し、さらに新たな2枚を加えて、計16枚からなる第2版、いわゆる「ピラネージ版」を発表した。これは牢獄の細部描写と明暗の対比を強調することによって「完成度」を高めたもので、初版とは趣を大きく異にしている。また、古代への関心が深まっているのも、第2版の特徴である。当館は既に昭和59年度に、「牢獄」の初版を購入している。今回、初版と第2版を並べて見ることにより、ピラネージの代表作である「牢獄」の制作意図は一層明確になるものと思われる。(出典: 昭和62年度新収作品 [配布資料].
