16世紀末、マニエリスムからバロックへの転換期には、奇矯な形体への志向と写実主義精神を合わせ持つ個性豊かな版画家たちが輩出した。その中で、この時代の最後を飾るとともに最も重要な役割を果たしたのが、ジャック・カロ（1592頃-1635）である。フランス北東部ロレーヌ公国の首都ナンシーに生まれたカロは、1608年ローマに赴き、フィリップ・トマサンのもとで銅版画技術を習得した。ついで1612年頃フィレンツェに移り、メディチ家コジモ二世の宮廷に仕え、同家出身のトスカナ大公故フェルディナンドの生涯や宮廷の祝典を主題に銅版画を制作した。初期の代表作と見なされる《聖アントニウスの誘惑（第一作）》（1617年頃）や《インプルネータの市》（1620年）は、約9年に及ぶフィレンツェ滞在中の作品である。1621年春にコジモ二世が歿するとまもなくナンシーへ戻り、以後ネーデルラントやパリでの短期間の滞在を除けば、歿年までこのロレーヌの町で活動した。しかし、その名声はこの地方にとどまらず、膨大な版画を通じて急速にヨーロッパ各国に広がった。カロの版画の主題は宮廷の祝典、コメディア・デラルテの登場人物、宗教的主題、風景のほか、乞食、不具者、ジプシーから王侯貴族に至るあらゆる階層の人々、また三十年戦争（1608-48年）に明け暮れる悲惨な時代を告発する鋭い社会批判を持つもの、さらに貨幣のデザインなどきわめて多岐にわたる。彼はこれらの主題を、時には非常にこまかい、しかし的確な筆致で銅板に刻むことによって、微細なモティーフにも動きを与え、画面全体に独特の生気を生み出している。そして、このような効果をもたらすため、彼は当時としては珍しく、硬いニスを銅板に塗るハード・グラウンド・エッチング技法を用いた。彼は素描家としても大変すぐれ、版画のための習作素描も数多く残しているが、彼の場合、版画と素描は様式的にも技法的にもきわめて密接な関係にあった。また、銅板を酸で腐食させる際に、主要なモティーフと副次的モティーフ、あるいは近景と遠景を何度にも分けて腐食させることによって線描の太さに変化をつけ、動勢のある自然な遠近感を生み出すなどの工夫がこらされている。カロの版画はカタログ編纂者リュールによれば、その数1428点に達するが、このたび当館が購入した作品は実にそのうちの四分の三を超える（ただし同一の紙に複数の図柄が刷ってある例もあり、その場合でもリュールは一つの図案に一つのカタログ番号を与えていることから、紙数としてはこの数をかなり下まわる）。 ‐‐[以下《二人のザンニ（喜劇の従者役）》について]グロテスクで奇矯な姿態を見せる、カロの版画の中でも最もマニエリスト的傾向の強い作品の一つ。道化（ザンニ）はイタリア喜劇コメディア・デラルテの登場人物。(出典: 昭和62年度新収作品 [配布資料].
