今日、本作品を含め35点の刷りの存在が知られるこのエングレーヴィングは、牧歌的風景を背景に立つ洗礼者聖ヨハネを表わしている。ヨハネは左手で洗礼の水を注ぐ鉢を持ち、右手で衣の裾をたくし上げ、全体のポーズは優雅なコントラポストを示す。彫像的な人物タイプや衣襞の表現は、極めてマンテーニャ的である。一方、背景には、灌木、切り株、羊飼いと羊たち、家々など、ジョルジョーネ的諸モティーフがスティプル法(点刻法)を駆使して情趣豊かに表現されている。つまり本作品には、カンパニョーラが活動の初期に学んだマンテーニャ的な要素と、ヴェネツィア移住後に身につけたジョルジョニスム的様式とが、人物と風景という形で混在しているわけである。現在ルーヴル美術館の素描室に本作品の下絵素描が保存されており、そこでは、ヨハネ像の部分は16世紀半ば頃の描き加えで、風景部分だけが版画の下図として用いられたことがわかる。従って本作品の背景は、ヨハネ像がマンテーニャ風に構想された後に、新たにルーヴルの素描をもとに付け加えられたものであると考えられる。オーバーフーバーはルーヴルの素描の作者をジョルジョーネその人であるとし、ワシントン・ナショナル・ギャラリー所蔵の《羊飼いの礼拝》が描かれた1505年頃の制作と考えたが、必ずしも確定的な説ではない。たとえばウェセイは、ルーヴル素描を1510年頃のジュリオの手に帰しており、その場合版画の制作年代もオーバーフーバーの説よりも5年ほど下ることになる。(出展: 国立西洋美術館名作選. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 1989. cat. no. 116)

This engraving by an important 16th century Italian printmaker, Giulio Campagnola, portrays John the Baptist standing in front of a pastoral landscape. His left hand is holding a bowl for pouring the holy water and his right hand is tucking up the hem of his outfit so that the overall pose forms an elegant contrapposto. The background is composed of Giorgionesque motifs such as shrubbery, a stump, shepherds and sheep, and houses, which are depicted passionately in stippling. The Mantegnesque elements Campagnola learnt early on in his career and the Giorgionesque style he acquired after he moved to Venice coexist in the form of portraiture and landscape.
