ゴヤは、今日でこそ西洋版画史上屈指の巨匠に数えられているが、生前その分野での活動はほとんど知られることがなかった。彼の四大版画集、「ロス・カプリーチョス」（一般に“気まぐれ”と訳される）、「戦争の惨禍」、「闘牛技」、「妄」のうち、「戦争の惨禍」と「妄」は作者の死後40年近くを経てようやく出版され、「ロス・カプリーチョス」は、異端審問所の圧力を受けたのであろう、彼自身の言葉によれば2日間に僅か27部を売っただけで販売を中止している。それは、彼の版画がきわめて辛辣な社会批判を含んでいたこと、そして、その想像力があまりに独創的であったことによるものと考えられる。「ロス・カプリーチョス」が発売されたのは、1799年2月であるが、その制作にはかなりの歳月を要したものと想像される。彼は1796年から97年にかけて描き綴った「サンルーカル画帖」と「マドリード画帖」のスケッチを一部参考にしつつ、セピア・インク、赤チョーク、赤インクなどさまざまな技法を用いて多数の習作素描を作り、これらをもとに版を刻んでいるが、エッチングによる線描を主体にしたものから、アクアティントによるハーフトーンに重きを置いたもの、描線を用いずに幾層ものハーフトーンだけで画面を構成するものまで、版画技法も多岐にわたり、曲折した推敲過程と版画技法の習熟に対するゴヤの熱意のほどが窺われる。ゴヤの制作意図は、自由主義の立場から当時スペインを支配していた堕落した貴族社会と教会を批判し、民衆の覚醒を促すことにあった。しかし、それと同時に、アルバ侯爵夫人との失恋や女性美に対する屈折した感情も赤裸に示され、また、理性の光の届かない闇の世界への憧れも垣間見られるなど、この版画集は1790年代後半のゴヤの置かれた情況を雄弁に物語っている。(出典: 昭和59年度新収作品 [配布資料].
