《ある生涯》 第3版1891年（初版1884年） 恋人に捨てられた女性が、娼婦に身を落とし、社会から疎外され、死にいたる生涯を描いた連作で、2枚の「序」を含んだ15葉からなる。イエス・キリストの登場する宗教的な場面をいくつか含み、物語を直接的に語るだけではなく、象徴的にもメッセージを伝える構成となっている。愛は裏切りに満ち、社会は公正ではなく、耐えることのみを求めるキリスト教も救いとはならず、最後にはただ無となるだけである、というニヒリスティックな調子が全体を貫いている。 第3葉 夢 ベッドのなかで頬杖をつき思案に沈む若い女性のまわりを、彼女の想像力が生んだ不気味な顔が囲んでいる。これらは、彼女のいだく不安を象徴している。彼女の頭のうえに顔を寝かせて眠る男性は、彼女が想いを寄せる相手であろう。（出典: マックス・クリンガー版画展：《イヴと未来》《ある生涯》《ある愛》, 2005.
