オランダ派絵画の先駆者のひとりであるルカス・ファン・ライデンは、その版画によってより高い名声を得た。初期の銅版画は、イタリアの銅版画家マルカントニオ・ライモンディにも影響を与えたが、それらはドイツの巨匠デューラーの格調高い芸術を反映しつつも、ゴシック絵画の伝統をふまえた独創的表現をもっている。 他方銅版画ほどの情熱を反映するものは少ないとは言え、ルカスは100点をこえる木版画をも制作している。それらのおよそ半数は書物の挿絵のためのもので、彼の一枚刷りの木版画は残存する部数が稀少であり、本作品も現存部数の非常に少ないもののひとつである。ここには、母ヘロデアにそそのかされたサロメの所望によって洗礼者ヨハネが断首される新約聖書の物語に取材し、ヨハネの首がヘロデとヘロデアのもとに運ばれるさまが描かれている。左上の窓からは、ヨハネ断首の場面が遠くのぞかれる。(出典: 昭和54年度新収作品 [配布資料].
