この作品は、レンブラントがヘルクレス・セーヘルス（c. 1590-c. 1645）による原版を改作した、非常に興味深いものである。セーヘルスは、版画におけるさまざまな技法を発明した独創的な版画家であり、レンブラントはこの作品によって、この先輩に深い敬意を表しているといえる。セーヘルスの原作では右方にトビアスと天使が描かれていたが、レンブラントはこの部分を削り取って、エジプトに逃避する聖家族の図に改作した。しかし、左方の風景部分はほとんど手が加えられていない。注意して見ると、聖家族の背後の木立と前方の地面の各所に、原作の痕跡が残されている。ステートは7段階あり、聖母子を中心とした部分と中央の遠景に変更が見られる。当購入作品は第6ステートであるが、第4、6、7ステートのもの以外は2部以上の刷りは知られていない。(出典: 昭和54年度新収作品 [配布資料].
