シニャックは､若い頃から海を愛し､自らヨットを駆って､地中海や大西洋を乗り回していた。そして､航海の先々で､活気にあふれた港湾の情景を素早く画帖に描きとめた。1890年代には､戸外で実景を前に制作するにあたり､油彩画をやめ､かわりに水彩画の技法をとるようになった。シニャックは油彩画では綿密な色彩分割と点描法を用いたが､それでは表現しがたいもの､つまり刻々と変化する自然の瞬時の情景を､水彩画独特の効果に託したのである。本作品では､漁船を映し出す海面の光の反射とゆらめきが､素早い水彩の筆致で簡潔に描かれており､自然の一瞬の現象をとらえる画家の鋭い観察力がうかがえる｡ （出典: デジタルギャラリー. 1999-2006）

In the 1890s, Signac ceased employing oil painting when working on an actual view and began to use watercolour instead. Whereas his oil paintings were composed of divisionism and pointillism, Signac resorted to the unique effect of watercolour to capture the view of a particular instant in nature. The flicker of the sea surface reflecting the fishing boats is portrayed with a quick brush, showing that this artist had a keen eye for observing an instantaneous phenomenon in nature. May 1923 (Fr. 4,500 for five watercolours by Signac) [see bill of sale of Galerie Bernheim-Jeune to Léonce Bénédite, dated 30 May 1923, in Bibliothèque centrale des musées nationaux, Paris; copy in NMWA curatorial files]; sequestered by French government, 1944; vested in French government under San Francisco Peace Treaty, 1952; transferred from French to Japanese government, 23 January 1959; entered into NMWA, April 1959.
