1917年、ピカソはローマ旅行で古典芸術の影響を深く受けて「新古典主義の時代」を迎える。1920年に描かれたこの小品は、水彩画であるが、白の不透明水彩を加えて画面に重厚さを与えている。「薔薇色の時代」から続くデフォルマシオンの強調が厭味なくその手や腕を豊かなものに作り上げる。こうした一本一本の線はまことに的確で、大柄な身体にのせられた比較的小さな顔の淡紅色の肌が、白を加えられた褐色によって引き立てられ、全体としては彫像のような重みと威厳が与えられている。（出典: 国立西洋美術館名作選. 東京, 国立西洋美術館, 2004. cat. no. 119）

Picasso, who visited Rome in 1917, was greatly influenced by classical art. Strong outlines became very prominent in comparison to works from his period of cubism, which sought to resolve objects into their constituent shapes. It was the beginning of his so-called Neo-Classical period. Even in this sketch from 1920, there is a fullness and precision to the lines, and the figure of the model conveys an imposing sense of volume. (Source: The Digital Gallery. 1999-2006)
